Students of Soochow University’s Debating Club triumphed over representatives from Peking University and won the 1st International Chinese Debating Competition, one of the most prestigious and influential Chinese debating events, held by China University of Political Science and Law from October 20th to 26th. The SCU debate team prevailed against other 31 talented competitors from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Australia and United Kingdom in this week-long arduous competition.

The four students representing SCU were all members of the Debating Club: Hou-En Tseng (senior, Dept. of Law), Yu-Ting Wu (senior, Dept. of International Business), Chao-Ting Chang (junior, Dept. of Sociology), and Sheng-Wei Lin (junior, Dept. of Philosophy). With a whole month of intensive trainings and preparations for seven debating subjects, the quadruplet defeated other strong teams from Nanjing Audit University, Communication University of China, University of Macau, Australian National University, Monash University, and University of International Relations before advancing to the final. In the championship round, the SCU team overcame loud cheers from nearly a thousand of local students rooting for Peking University as the home team, and fared well in making convincing arguments. Their prudent reasoning and organized debating won more and more applause and helped them rally to clinch the title with a 17-9 win.
