About 171 SCU students from 19 clubs showed their passion and spirit of service in a charitable event in the Shilin Official Residence starting from November 26th. More than 1,200 citizens, most of whom were residents of Shilin District, had great fun through interactions with these students on the first day of the event.

The event, named “UB1 School-Community Service Learning Program: Student Clubs Activities in Shilin Official Residence,” was a joint effort by the Shilin Official Residence, Parks and Street Lights Office of Taipei City Government’s Public Works Department, and SCU students clubs. Among the 19 clubs, 11 of them, which presented live performances, were clubs of wind orchestra, guitars, jazz dance, Kunqu opera singing, global folk dances, poetry, musicals, Chinese martial arts, pop dance, glove puppetry, and fitness, while the other 8, which set up stalls for exhibition, services or games, were clubs of traditional Chinese medicine, magic, coffee brewing, Tarot reading, numerology, modern poems, etc.

The event aimed to encourage students to go beyond campus into the communities and serve people. Through their interactions with local residents, the students of each club learned how to show their talents other than the knowledge from textbooks and to promote the cultures and features of their clubs. And the event helped local residents know more about their clubs and Soochow University.

Chun-Tse Tsai, a senior from History Department and the chief coordinator of the event, said that organizing this event was rather tiring, but the effort made by every club and student, as well as the smiles on the residents’ faces, made it all worthwhile.
