Welcome to SCU

Soochow University, founded in 1900 in Suzhou, was the first western-style university in China. After the government of the Republic of China moved to Taiwan, Soochow alumni exerted tireless efforts to reestablish their alma mater in Taipei. In 1951, a board of directors was created and premises rented on Hankou Street in downtown Taipei to set up the Soochow Preparatory School. The Ministry of Education approved Soochow’s plan for resumption at the end of 1954, and the School of Law was the first to be established, which included the Departments of Law, Political Science, Economics, and Accounting, along with an attached Foreign Languages and Literature Department. Soochow became the first private university in Taiwan.

Nearly 70 years after her rebirth in Taiwan, Soochow University is now a fully accredited university with two campuses; the Waishuanghsi campus, and Downtown campus. As one of the most prestigious comprehensive private universities on the island, Soochow is complete with six colleges (the School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, the School of Science, the School of Law, the School of Business, and the School of Big Data Management), offering 24 majors, 24 Master’s, and six Doctoral Programs. The student population has exceeded 15,000.

In carrying out our education programs, we adhere steadfastly to the best traditions and the school’s motto "Unto a Full Grown Man". As a result of the unbending principles from the board, efficient management in school operation, and comprehensive foundation programs, the school has received the "Teaching Excellence Award” from the Ministry of Education for thirteen consecutive years. Beginning 2018 the Ministry has also granted Soochow the "Higher Education Sprout Project" subsidies to improve the teaching and learning mechanism to better cope with the demands of a rapid-changing society.

The development our educational programs are based on the pursuit of highest "teaching quality” and "learning excellence” for the students. Building on the century-old academic excellence and with full understanding of our intrinsic values, a practical integration of resources, and a focus on strengthening character development, we hope to create a new era for Soochow University.

Soochow University is on the cultural axis of Taipei City. Near the National Palace Museum, among lush green hills and with a clear stream flowing by, the Waishuanghsi Campus presents a spectacular view and offers a superior study environment. On this campus are the School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, the School of Science, and the School of Big Data Management.

The School of Law, the School of Business, and the Extension School are on the Downtown Campus, in the administrative and commercial center of Taipei, easily accessible to professionals. In their academic work, our faculty and students can utilize the rich resources offered by adjacent administrative and commercial institutions and libraries all within walking distance or closely connected by the convenience of transportation. So too are the shuttle bus service between the two campuses each with its own unique cultural and academic resources and distinctive environment.
