As a chair professor of Tung-Min Hsieh Liberal Arts and Social Science Seminar starting the academic year 2017-18, Professor Mung-Shiung Hsieh was invited to give a lecture on European history and civilization on December 8th at Soochow’s Downtown Campus. Hsieh’s relaxed and humorous teaching style, accompanied by his singing of the national anthem of France, grabbed the students’ attention and aroused their interest.
In his welcoming remarks, SCU Vice President Bau-Tscheng Dung said that despite Hsieh’s multiple prestigious identities as medical scientist, educator, historian and photographer, he is truly gentle and humble. Dung believed Professor Hsieh could have higher achievements in other professions if he had not put so much effort in medical science, and it is indeed a pleasure to have him in SCU to share his knowledge on more issues.
Aimed at inspiring SCU students, his lecture on Friday covered a wide range of topics, including the Eastern expedition of Alexander the Great, the rise and fall of the Rome Empire, Crusades, the rise of Ottoman empire, Renaissance, the Age of Discovery, Enlightenment, The French Revolution, British Colonization, and Industrial Revolution.
Hsieh also shared interesting anecdotes and gave a fun quiz of European geography, followed by the highlight of his lecture: singing the national anthem of France. He encouraged students to change their mindset and to develop the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and to solve problems, which will eventually lead them to success.
