On February 12th, 2019, Soochow’s school administration, along with nearly 200 faculty and staff members, gathered at the J. T. Tai & Co. Foundation Conference Room at the Waishuangsi Campus to give New Year’s greetings. They wished each other a wonderful Year of Pig and a great semester ahead while enjoying instrumental music and group singing.
President Wei-Ta Pan, Vice President Wei-Liang Chao, Vice President Bau-Tscheng Dung and all participants in the party savored the oboe solos “Torment of a Flower” and “The Mission” performed by Soochow alumna Ssu-Yu Lai, a Formosa Waterpark explosion survivor. They were followed by a duet of “The Moon Represents My Heart” from Lai (oboe) and Department of Music Chairperson Gwang-Lin Peng (violin). Students of the Department of Music also sang in chorus a moving rendition of “The Spring Breeze Kisses My Face” with Prof. Li-Chin Huang as the conductor.
In his opening remarks, President Pan mentioned this year’s design of the University’s red envelopes: a piglet walking through the school’s gate, which makes up the Chinese character for “family”(家). Pan hoped that Soochow can be like a big family, with every member supporting each other. The two vice-presidents and all the deans wished everyone a prosperous new year before the party wrapped up with a prayer led by Reverend Kuan-Yu Huang and a group singing of the song “Tomorrow will be Better.”
