Varsity speakers from Soochow’s law school clinched the first place in the Taiwan National Qualifying Rounds at 2020 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, held from February 12th to 16th. Unfortunately, they would not get their shot at the final rounds in the U.S. scheduled in mid April, which had to be cancelled due to the ongoing outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic.
Representatives winning the title for Soochow in the Taiwan Division included: Meng-Tsai Tsai (Dept. of Political Science, fifth year), Yo-Peng Kuo (Dept. of Law, senior), Ting-Lin Shih (Dept. of Law, senior), Chih-Lin Yang (Dept. of Law, sophomore) and Hsuan-Ming Hsu (Dept. of Law, sophomore). Among them, Ting-Lin Shih and Chih-Lin Yang were also named outstanding debaters in the individual match.
The victory must also be accredited to the assistance from some teachers and senior students of the Law Department, especially the leadership of Lu-Yun Chen (Dept. of Law, senior) and the coaching from Professor Yean-Sen Teng of the Law Department.
As the outbreak of COVID-19 is worsening across many parts of the world, the competition’s organizers had decided to call off the 61th White & Case International Rounds, where winners in different division rounds would have contested for the final top honors in Washington, D.C. from April 12th to 18th this year.
Hosted by International Law Students Association, Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is currently the largest moot court competition in the world. This year teams from over 700 law schools in more than 100 countries had participated. Debate topics are mostly international legal issues that could emerge or arouse controversies in the international society.
