Soochow University announced the start of the celebration of its 120th anniversary with a press conference at Waishuangsi Campus on Oct. 5th, 2020. With a wonderful performance by the percussion ensemble of the Department of Music as the beginning, this grand event also invited some outstanding alumni back to their alma mater to share joy for and their thoughts about Soochow.

President Wei-Ta Pan stressed that SCU has insisted on managing the school with diligence and perseverance, which is why and how it has cultivated so many talents in the fields of law and other expertise. Wishing Soochow a happy birthday, Shi-Sheng Liu, the general counsel of the Alumni Association, called on 130,000 alumni to support the development of the alma mater and hoped every Soochower could keep in mind the school motto: “To nourish the spirit of universal truth, and to emulate the perfect man of the ages.”

One alumna, TV news anchor Shu-Li Wang, said that in her days in Soochow she learned about campaign planning and interpersonal skills through handling club activities, and she encouraged everyone to engage in social charities. Dr. Ru-Shi Liu of National Taiwan University, who graduated from SCU’s Department of Chemistry, shared that he became apt in interpersonal relations thanks to his club experiences in Chinese traditional music and in the scout.

In addition to words of wisdom from the senior alumni, Jun-Shuo Lou (also known as SHOU), who graduated from SCU’s Department of International Business and is now a famous young rapper in Taiwan, expressed his gratitude to Soochow. Owing to what he had learned from college, he managed to release his first album by using the skills of marketing without signing with any record company.

Wojtek Sochacki, a foreign student representative from Poland, also praised the enthusiasm of people in SCU, who have made him fall in love with the life here in Taiwan.

In the press conference, the school also announced the long-anticipated upcoming Oct. 9th inauguration of the school history room with digital features combining technology and fun. Other events, including a photo exhibition, a conference, a concert, a grand banquet, and an AI forum jointly organized with Common Wealth Magazine, would all contribute to the celebration of Soochow’s 120th birthday.
