Never Give Up: 10 SU Student Cyclists Ride to Wuling at 3,275m

After two days’ hard pedaling from October 30^th  to 31^st, 2021, ten Soochow students successfully reached Wuling, the highest point a paved road can get to in Taiwan, at an altitude of 3,275 meters.

Co-hosted by Moral and Civil Education Center (MCEC) and Socialization and Aesthetics Education Center and organized by Soochow’s Cycling Club, the event aimed to promote the cycling sports on campus and cultivate students’ sportsmanship.

The team was led by Dean of Office of Student Affairs Kuen-Chang Lee, Director of Socialization and Aesthetics Education Center Yu-Ting Wu, and Hui-Ling Huang of MCEC. Dean of Student Affairs Lee encouraged the students to learn how to cheer up and take care of their partners during the riding process, and to always keep in mind the spirit of “teamwork” and “never give up.”

The driving force behind this event was the leader and cadre of the newly established SU Cycling Club, dedicated to every detail from preparation, planning, training, to the actual execution of the ride.

“It is an honor for the Cycling Club to lead students who have the courage to take this challenge,” said Zhe-Yu Lin, leader of SU Cycling Club. “The training and teamwork in the process were so touching. It proved that as long as you are willing to make efforts and dare to venture, conquering Wuling will not be an unattainable dream.”

Hui-Chun Xu, who was in charge of the event, said that “the most touching is not the moment when we reached Wuling, but the moment before it, when the leading riders chose to stop and wait for their partners who trailed behind to reach the summit together.”

The students braved the challenges in several tough uphill sections along the way, such as Cuei-Feng, Yuan-Feng, and Kun-Yang. It took considerable experience and training to overcome those trials to their physical limit and endurance in the alpine climate environment.
