Over 100 legal professionals and students listened attentively in the online speech of Soochow University’s Tang Sung-Chang Lecture Series on May 27th, 2022, learning both legal literacy and hands-on experience from Grand Justice Horng-Shya Huang.
Huang stated that her practice as a pro bono attorney was a key to becoming a grand justice. She started to render legal services for public interest in 1995, and realized that people are often dissatisfied with the judicial system regardless of what is legally right or wrong. And she believes that as guardians of the Constitution, grand justices can interpret the law and protect every citizen.
The honorable justice said that when writing the opinion of judge, she focuses not only on theories, but also on the facts of the case, because the purpose of trials is to discover truths, so even if the accused has passed away, she still shoulders the responsibility of defending for him or her.
Recalling the four misjudged cases in Taiwan, Huang wanted the audience to keep in mind that miscarriage of justice is more than just a social issue, and that the law is indeed closely related to people. And she urged SU law majors to keep enhancing their legal knowledge and give back to society.
