Candidate combination No.2, Chi-Yi Yen and her two deputies Kuan-Yu Wei and Yung-Yu Li won the by-election for the president and vice presidents of SCU Student Association (SUSA) held from October 19th to 21st, with a total of 1,225 votes. According to Special Election Committee (SEC), the voter turnout in this by-election was 11.25%, 1.25% higher than the threshold.
SUSA explained that the by-election was held because the voter turnout in the 60th 3-in-1 election in May was lower than the 10 % threshold, failing to elect the new president and vice presidents. Therefore, SEC, according to the “Rules of Organization of SUSA,” needed to hold a by-election within 50 days after the beginning of this new semester.
The number of students who vote and participate in student body elections for the past few years is decreasing, dropping from 14.1% two years ago, to 10.51% this May, according to the University’s election committee. Ya-Jie Song, a staff of the Community and Interpersonal Relationship Development Center noted the rising of social media in recent years might be the reason students tend to express their grudges anonymously online, and neglect to make their case through the more traditional channel. Even though there were two groups of candidates competing with each other, elaborating on their visions and answering audience’s questions in face-to-face occasions, the number of participants and the voter turnout remained low.
The Special Elections Committee (SEC) has loaned official ballot boxes and booths from the Shilin District Administration Office this year, in the hope to increase student involvement in student body election by taking the proficiency of election to another level.
