With years of experience of sending love and offering help in southeast Asian cities including Manila, Chiang Mai and West Timor, Soochow University International Volunteer Club celebrated its fifth anniversary of service in Manila, the Philippines, by sharing its amazing experiences on March 12th, 2018 at Downtown campus.

The Club’s Manila service team has been to the city every summer and winter vacation for 5 years in a row. “We’ve made a lot of efforts in getting local information with Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines and having more academic exchanges with Ateneo de Manila University,” said An-Chi Hsu, the leader of the 10th Manila service team.

With a central idea of “edutainment,” planners of Manila service team put tremendous efforts on their preparation, hoping to bring beneficial effects to the community of COX and Gabaldon through various lesson plans, such as art classes which inspire the creative thinking of local children, environmental sanitation classes which promote the importance of hygiene, community visits which bond with the locals, and do-it-yourself classes which teach the locals how to be self-sufficient.

People there may not lead a wealthy life, but they all have an innocent heart that most modern people rarely have. Soochow student volunteers always feel happy to send their love and offer their help to these locals despite the differences in their languages and races. Just like one member of Manila service team Jia-Jia Wun said: “You’ll always feel surprised and amazed every time you serve there!”
