Grabbing the once-a-year opportunity of Japan’s famous cherry blossom season, 30 SCU alumni and students had great fun in a spring outing in Tokyo on April 1st, 2018. Under the invitation and arrangement by the SCU Alumni Association in Japan and its president Ming-Tian Huang (Class of 1970, Department of Accounting), all the participants enjoyed the floral festival as well as a reunion/welcome lunch in a pleasant sunny day.

Among large crowds flocking for flower viewing, the SCU alumni caught quite much attention in the park by hanging two Soochow’s flags, whose red and black colors looked special against the pinkish cherry blossoms and the clear blue sky. Huang took the opportunity to thank the alumni and students for their participation, while a senior alumna Xiao-Ming Ou (Class of 1980, Department of Japanese) entertained the group with fun games and activities as moderator, bringing lots of laughter and applause.

The 30 participants graduated or are currently from different departments and in different years, and have been active in all walks of life. Senior members included Rong-Sheng Chen (Class of 1960, Department of Chinese), who was among the first graduates from Soochow’s Chinese Department, and is also the Honorary President of SCU Alumni Association in Japan. Younger students included those who just came to Japan for exchange study this year. This well represented the spirit of the Alumni Association in Japan, which focuses on connecting the past and the future and passing on the torch from generation.

The SCU Alumni Association in Japan recently established a Facebook fan page in the hope of breaking the spatial barriers so as to improve the visibility of the Association among Soochow alumni, to recruit more members, and to facilitate quicker and better exchange of information among alumni in Japan. The Association also encourages any alumni who would like to study, work, or live in Japan to join the family of the SCU Alumni Association in Japan.
