Soochow’s Law Prof. Gui-Ying Lee Receives Lifelong Honor as EU’s Jean Monnet Chair

Professor Gui-Ying Lee (李貴英) of Soochow University’s School of Law stood out among nearly 350 competitors and won a grant of 34,056 euros (roughly NT$1,260,000) from the European Union (EU) with her project proposal to set up a series of Jean Monnet Chair courses. Not only was Lee awarded a lifetime honor as a Jean Monnet Chair Professor, but Soochow University also became the only private university in Taiwan that won the honor this year.

The EU had raised 3,500,000 euros for the 2018 Jean Monnet Activities, which aim to promote more interactions between the European Union and other foreign countries. This year only 15%, or 52, of the 344 professors around the world qualified for application received this grant. With Lee’s success, Soochow has become one of the few universities in the world that provide the EU’s Jean Monnet Chair courses.

Among the 52 admissions that won the grant, four came from Taiwan, which put the country in the fourth place in a total of 13 countries that were sponsored by this fund from the EU, only behind Russia, the U.S., and Australia.
