Standing out from 352 applicants, Chi-Hsien Chang, student of SU’s Department of Chinese Literature, was the winner of “Diligence Honor” in 2022 President Educational Award, which is established by Ministry of Education to recognize students who have achieved great accomplishments in adversity.

Chang lives with his 90-year-old grandparents and has taken care of them since his college years. He needs to feed his grandma, a patient of senile dementia, help her take showers, and change her diapers after school. Sometimes he would take grandparents for outdoor trips by pushing the wheelchairs for them.

Chang also won the 2019 Glory of Ascendant Award by Bliss and Wisdom Foundation of Culture and Education (BWFOCE) and the Filial Piety Award of SU’s Moral Youth because of his love and care for his grandparents.

In addition to his commendable morality, Chang has also endeavored to memorize and recite Confucian classics, a habit influenced by his mother, and has accumulated Chinese cultural knowledge since he was a child. He had won a few top honors in BWFOCE’s Classics Recitation Competitions, and had been a volunteer in 2018 and 2019 SU International Ultra Marathon and for BWFOCE Life Camps.

Chang has recently enrolled in the Master Program at the Department of International Business in National Dong Hwa University, and expects himself to become a manager in elderly care industry in the future and do his part in contributing to the graying society.
