The 2026 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games concluded on May 6, with Soochow University students delivering stellar results in fencing, boxing, and taekwondo. Many of the athletes came from student clubs and trained after class, showing determination, passion, and strong competitive spirit on the national stage.
In fencing, Wan-Yang Tsai of the Western Fencing Club won silver in Men’s Individual Épée, General Division. He also teamed up with Chia-Chi Chang and Hsien-Jui Chiu in Men’s Team Foil, General Division, where the team showed solid coordination and earned a bronze medal for Soochow.
Kuan-Ting Lin of the Boxing Club competed in Men’s Boxing, Open Division, 10th Weight Class (90+ kg). Although he was not a student-athlete admitted for sports specialization, he advanced to the final and won silver through rigorous training, resilience, and impressive performance.
Another boxing club member, Yu-Cheng Kuo, placed fifth in the fifth weight class, adding to Soochow’s strong showing at the Games.
After the competition, Lin reflected on the team’s long journey. “As captain for the past three years, I have seen the team grow from struggling against Division A athletes to being able to compete with them,” he said. “All the sweat, tears, and difficult training moments remain vivid to me.”
Lin added that the team had worked with limited resources but had given its fullest effort. “We stood in the Open Division as regular students,” he said. He also expressed hope that the university could provide more support so the club may one day represent Soochow as an official varsity team.
Soochow student clubs also showed their strength in other events. Ling-Wen Chou of the Taekwondo Club placed seventh in the women’s 53 kg sparring event. In fencing, Chien-Jung Liu, Hsing-Ying Wu, Chieh-Yu Li, and Yueh-Ting Tao advanced to the top six in the women’s team foil event.
These club athletes trained independently in their free time despite limited resources. Their achievements at this year’s Games represent not only individual honors, but also Soochow students’ unwavering commitment to club sports.
The Socialization and Aesthetics Education Center said it will continue to support student clubs as they pursue excellence in diverse fields. The center also hopes these achievements will inspire a stronger sports culture on campus and help Soochow’s athletic clubs develop with greater stability and long-term support.
