Hundreds of SCU alumni came back to their alma mater on March 17th, 2018, to celebrate Soochow’s 118th anniversary and enjoyed a wonderful banquet at the Sky Garden of D building at Waishuangsi campus. SCU’s Office of Social Resource and Alumni Service also prepared an array of activities to appreciate all the support from alumni and fund donors.

SCU President Wei-Ta Pan expressed his gratitude to all alumni for giving enthusiastic support to build a better learning environment for Soochow students along the years. He vowed to nurture future talents who would be strong and smart enough to overcome difficulties and versatile and professional in various fields. He also revealed plans to establish an artificial intelligence research center among Soochow’s schools and departments with an eye to optimizing the soft and hard power and turning SCU into one of the top universities in Taiwan.

The director-general of  SCU Alumni Association Ji-Ren Liu gave his recognition on the support from all alumni, as well as on the excellence Soochow has achieved over the years. Liu, along with President Pan and the school board chairman Shao-Yu Wang, cut the cake to wish Soochow a happy 118th birthday.

Also in the banquet were the singings from several groups, such as the Bleinders and the overseas chorus of SCU Alumni Association in University of South California, as well as many administrative heads and staff members from the School of Business and the departments of Accounting, Finance Engineering and Actuarial Mathematics, and Chinese.

The most touching and inspiring moment was when SCU alumina of the Department of Music Si-Yu Lai performed music with her oboe. As a victim in the horrifying water park explosion accident in New Taipei City in 2015, Lai had endured tremendous pain and trauma, and gone through a long and difficult recovery process before she could stand on the stage and play the oboe again.

With tasty delicacies and wonderful music at the Sky Garden, alumni all had a great chat that brought back many beautiful memories. This homecoming meant a lot to Soochow, and offered a great opportunity for the University to thank all alumni for their support that has helped SCU become more and more prosperous.
