In cooperation with the Foundation for Yunus Social Business Taiwan (FYSBT), Soochow University set up its Yunus Social Business Center on November 19, 2018, the seventh in Taiwan and the first among the universities in Taipei. In the signing ceremony at Soochow’s Downtown campus, the school administration vowed to nurture future social business talents and help eliminate poverty in the society.

Joining over 60 universities that have founded such centers, including the world-renowned Oxford University, Paris University, University of Barcelona, etc., Soochow became the seventh university in Taiwan to establish a Yunus Social Business Center.

Such centers have been the brainchild of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, who have been dedicated to helping the underclass with his Grameen Bank, and expanded his ideals by setting up Yunus Social Business Centers worldwide.

SCU President Wei-Ta Pan considered it an honor to work with FYSBT, and accredited it to the help and connections from an alumnus of Department of Financial Engineering and Actuarial Mathematics Wei-Hsien Lin (林偉賢, Class of 86’).

As Pan regarded it as a university’s duty to help the financially weaker groups in the society, Philippa Tsai (蔡慧玲), Chairperson of FYSBT, recognized Soochow as a solid force among Taiwan’s higher education in fulfilling its social responsibility, with its school motto matching the spirit and aim of Yunus Social Business Center.
