During the three-day 2018 Taiwan Innotech Expo (TIE) from September 27th to 29th, 2018, professor Mei-Lin Ho (何美霖) of Soochow University’s Department of Chemistry and her research team, and the Associate Professor of the Office of Physical Education Chang-Hung Lee (李昶弘) nabbed gold medals with two patented products, “A detecting device of the molarity of Nitrite” and “The ball picker,” respectively among a total of 704 entries from 20 countries contending for the prizes this year.

Due to the large number of people in Taiwan who suffer from infections of the urinary tract (UTl), Ho and her research team had spent three years to improve the stability of UTl testing instruments and solve the inconvenience that the device needed to be operated by technicians.  Ho’s invention could help patients carry around and use the equipment with much less hassle.

The ball picker that Lee made out of daily necessity reduces time spent in picking up ping-pong balls so that students or athletes could focus more on learning skills. Considering users of different ages, Lee also made further revisions of the device. For example, Lee would think of how to expanding the collector’s diameter to help seniors locate the balls more precisely.

These two patented products are not just convenient gadgets but, more importantly, devices that aim to show compassion for others. In the future, it is hoped that through industry-academy cooperation, more inventions can bring more benefits to the society in people’s daily life.
