Dept. of Microbiology Unveils New Test Lab for Food Safety

Soochow’s Test and Research Center officially started operation on September 19th, 2020, becoming the first laboratory that focuses on microbiological inspections and obtained ISO/ IEC 17025 accreditation among universities in northern Taiwan.

With a seminar on the issue of food safety and a certificate-awarding ceremony marking the inauguration of the new facility, the school’s Department of Microbiology vowed to contribute to guarding the health of people in the country.

President Wei-Ta Pan, Chair of Microbiology Department Chung-Yi Lee, Vice-President Wei-Liang Chao and Bau-Tscheng Dung, Dean of College of Science Bea-Ven Chang, Dean of Office of Social Resource and Alumni Service Shu-Fang Wang, Office of General Affairs Chief Joann Chuang, and Chief Secretary Kai-Chieh Chia were all present witnessing the grand opening of the Center.

Chin-Sin Shu, CEO of Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF), presented the ISO/IEC 17025 certificate to the Lab, followed by the seminar where Director of Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI) Chii-Cherng Liao, Manager of TAF Yung-Tso Lai and Manager of Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) Jia-Kuan Hsu shared their views on the issue of food safety.

President Pan affirmed the 40 years of outstanding performance in research and education by the Department of Microbiology, which is also the only department or program in Taiwan that provides a complete set of courses on microbiology. Hsu congratulated Soochow for the establishment of this certified testing lab and looked forward to its positive influence on Taiwan’s food safety.
