For the first time in Soochow’s history, five mini snowmen appeared in Waishuangsi campus. They were piled up by some SU students with snow from Yangmingshan in the morning of January 8th, 2021, attracting crowds of students who watched with interest and took photos.

With enough moist and the advent of a cold wave that froze many parts of northern Taiwan, Taipei’s suburban mountain Yangmingshan had seen snow in the early morning of January 8th. That was when Shao-Heng Xue, a sophomore of SU’s Department of Politics, brought some snow down on a whim from nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, and made a little snowman in the octagonal pavilion on campus.

The little cute thing remained in great form for more than 10 hours, much longer than the originally expected one hour, thanks to the maintenance of other enthusiastic students and the low temperature. Xue even wrote a "certified pedigree" which indicated that the snowman is “purebred.”

Many students flocked to the scene to take a glimpse at and photographed the snowman, while a few others went up to the mountain to follow suit, creating more snowmen to join the first one as its “brothers.” In the end around the evening, there were a total of five snowmen of different sizes and looks. Some had typical appearances, while some got flowers on their heads and some others seemed to be smiling and watching people come and go around them.

The photos of the snowmen went viral on the Internet in the following hours and were shared by many Soochow students and alumni. These little visitors not only caught the eyes of many who had not seen snow in their life, but also brought a little happiness to students in the chilly final-exam week.
