Under the management by SU’s School of Business and Chinese Language Center, 55 Students from Soochow’s Intensive English Camp had indulged in exchanging English and Chinese languages with 26 foreign students of Chinese Language Center for over two hours at Downtown Campus on July 15th, 2022.
Kent Wang, vice dean of Chinese Language Center, demanded that the students switch their speaking language between English and Chinese in every 10 minutes. Topics went from easy ones to more difficult, including brief self-introduction, self-learning approaches, and ways to solve problems.
By the end of the event, a foreign student Mary Ellen Ashley mentioned that culture differences make language learning important because some Chinese words can’t be directly translated into English; if people want to understand a culture, they have to learn the local language first.
Vincent Jiang, an American Chinese student of SU’s Chinese Language Center, shared that learning a language face to face may increase the efficiency of studying compared to doing it through online meetings.
SU Vice President Bau-Tscheng Dung, Dean of School of Business Jin-Shyang Roan, and several faculty members also joined the discussions with the students. Thanks to the sponsorship to the Intensive English Camp from Soochow alumni Ting-Chung Chen (English Dept.) and Chung-Hsien Liu (Dept. of Business Administration), the students had one more opportunity to exchange languages.
