More than 100 alumni of SU’s Department of History, along with many active and retired faculty members, school executives and distinguished guests gathered in the banquet at Ambassador Hotel Taipei on September 3rd, 2022, to commemorate the Department’s 50-year history.
Carrying blessings from alumni and faculty, a video that reminded every member of their connections with the Department started the dinner party. In his opening remarks, Ling-Pei Lu, Chair of the Department, expressed his gratitude to the University and former chairpersons for nurturing the Department in the past half century.
SU President Wei-Ta Pan pointed out the importance of humanities, the core value that the Department of History represents. “Technology is derived from humanity. Without humanity, technology could go astray,” said Pan.
Academia Sinica President James C. Liao urged the Department’s students and alumni to continue their effort and make more contributions to the society, a note following the speech from Vice President Chin-Shing Huang, who advised that “God can create history but cannot change history; only historians can.”
By stressing the motto for the anniversary “50吾刻” (“50 Years of Our Moments”), a homophone of “無時無刻” (“anytime”), legislator and alumnus De-Wei Lee (Class of 1993), who is also the President of the Department’s alumni association, hoped the Department can keep making history and leading trends.
Faculty and officials cut the cake together and toasted to the Department’s memorable 50 years of time, wishing the Department a happy birthday and a great future.
