From May 8th to May 31st, SU’s Memory Archives, Secretariat, and Library memorialized former President Kai Duanmu and his contributions to the re-establishment of Soochow University by jointly organizing the “The Photo and Cultural Relics Exhibition of Dr. Kai Duanmu.”

Attending the opening ceremony were SU President Wei-Ta Pan and many distinguished guests gathered, including two senior alumni, the Speaker of the student congress, and dozens of faculty and staff members and students.

Hundreds of Duanmu’s photographs and videos are on display in the exhibition, as well as his robes, glasses, pens, cufflinks, seals, and a treasured collection of traditional Chinese opera string-bound books published by the Qing Dynasty.

President Pan told the heartwarming stories of President Duanmu’s devotion to the school, adding that Soochowers should inherit Duanmu’s spirit to ensure the sustainable development and future progress of Soochow University.

From the perspective of a former student, senior alumnus Peng-Liang Lin (Class of 1977, Dept. of English Language and Literature) elaborated on the four paradigms that President Duanmu established: interdisciplinary learning, legal ethics, alumni-assisted governance, and social volunteering.

Duanmu dedicated his life to re-establishing Soochow University and inspired many successors to devote themselves to SU. Not only will his contributions be remembered, but his legacy and spirit should be carried forward by all Soochowers.
