During the 22nd Soochow University International Ultramarathon, foreign runners encountered more than physical endurance challenges. For many of the 33 ultrarunners from seven countries, the most memorable part was not the competition itself but the constant cheers and support that shaped the event’s unique atmosphere.
Several athletes described how the brightly lit campus loop track, continuous cheers throughout the night, and attentive volunteer support contributed to an experience unlike other international ultramarathons. The uninterrupted encouragement, they said, transformed fatigue into motivation and became a defining feature of the race.
Andrzej Piotrowski of Poland, a veteran ultrarunner with extensive European racing experience, returned to the SU course for the third time. Although he withdrew due to injury, he noted that running laps around the campus track was very special. And the most striking was the warmth and energy he felt from the students and volunteers.
Men’s champion Iván López of Spain, competing at SU also for the third time, said his objective was straightforward: to win. After securing first place, he joked that his immediate priority was food. He added that the enthusiasm of Taiwanese spectators and volunteers played a crucial role in sustaining his focus throughout the race.
Japanese ultrarunner Miho Nakata also emphasized the emotional intensity of the event. Returning to the familiar campus circuit, she said the cheering that continued through the night deeply moved her, and she felt grateful for the chance to stand on the SU track again and finish the challenge.
Reflecting on the event as a whole, many foreign athletes said the 24-hour SU International Ultramarathon represented not only a test of physical limits but also a meaningful cultural exchange. This spirit of Soochow Ultramarathon, made possible through the collective efforts of students, volunteers, and runners, would remain with them in every part of the world as they returned home.
