Honorary Board Chair Shao-Yu Wang, a longtime leader and benefactor of Soochow University, passed away on February 18 at the age of 102. The University expressed its deepest condolences and paid tribute to Wang’s lifelong dedication, leadership, and lasting contributions to the development of Soochow.

Wang had a long and distinguished association with the University. After Soochow was re-established in Taiwan, he taught in the Department of Law for 35 years and led alumni affairs for more than two decades. He later served as a board member for 18 years before becoming chair of the Board of Trustees, a position he held from 1987 to 2025, making him the longest-serving board chair in the University’s history.

During his tenure, Wang played a pivotal role in strengthening the University’s institutional foundation. In addition to donating more than NT$200 million personally, he helped mobilize wider social resources to support campus development and long-term planning.

His efforts contributed to improving the University’s financial stability, expanding campus facilities, acquiring additional land, recruiting outstanding scholars from Taiwan and abroad, and reinforcing sound board governance.

University officials noted that Wang’s vision and commitment helped lay a firm foundation for Soochow’s sustainable growth. His leadership was widely respected by faculty, students, alumni, and the broader university community.

Board Chair Sung-Chang Tang and President Chyan-Long Jan said Wang’s lifelong devotion to education and to Soochow will remain an important part of the University’s history. They added that his values, public-minded spirit, and deep affection for the university will continue to guide Soochow as it moves into the future.
