SU, TAISE Map Out Blueprint for Sustainable University Development

To deepen its commitment to sustainable development and connect with international trends, Soochow University President Chyan-Long Jan led an administrative team to visit the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) on May 5, 2026, opening up opportunities for future cooperation in sustainability education, social engagement, and public outreach.

The meeting was made possible through discussions between Soochow University Board Chairman Sung-Chang Tang and TAISE Chairman Dr. Eugene Chien. During the exchange, Dr. Chien noted his friendship with Chairman Tang of more than 40 years and invited President Jan and the university team to TAISE to share observations and suggestions on sustainability development.

The SU delegation included Vice President for Research and Development Kai-Chieh Hu, Director of General Affairs Ying-Hsuan Chuang, School of Extension Education Director Tse-Chuan Hsu, and Evaluation Affairs Division Chief Yi-Ching Chiang. The TAISE delegation was led by Chairman Dr. Eugene Chien, together with Deputy CEO Chi-Yi Jeng, Deputy Secretary-General Yen-Po Yeh, Deputy Secretary-General Chia-Hung Chien, and Manager Chih-Wei Chang.

During the meeting, both sides held preliminary discussions on the “Soochow University Sustainable Development Project.” Future cooperation will focus on enhancing the university’s overall visibility by showcasing and promoting sustainability-related achievements, allowing the public to better understand Soochow’s sustainability practices and distinctive development features.

In recent years, SU’s dedication to sustainability has garnered significant acclaim. The University was awarded silver and bronze honors in the Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (TSAA) with three initiatives: a silver award for “Soochow International Ultra-Marathon Net-Zero Carbon Emissions,” and bronze awards for both “The Eye of Nature: Environmental Sustainability Action” and the "Sustainable Mentorship Program.”

Furthermore, Soochow has consistently demonstrated this commitment through University Social Responsibility (USR). For instance, its faculty and students are deeply engaged in local cultural-historical preservation and community development through the signature project, “Cultural Sustainability and Urban Revitalization: the Conception of Shilinology.”

These accolades highlight the university's long-standing integration of the UN SDGs into its core operations. To ensure transparent governance, SU has proactively published its annual Sustainability Report since 2021, winning consecutive recognition from the Taiwan University Action Awards (TUSA).

Soochow University will continue to expand its sustainability impact and move toward a sustainable campus with both depth and breadth. Through cooperation with TAISE, it hopes to further highlight its achievements in sustainable education, social responsibility, and institutional development.
