Five Soochow students of the Debate Club stood out from 16 elite teams of Mainland China and Taiwan, and won the championship in the 21st Cross-strait College Students Debate Competition, held from July 27th to 30th, 2022.

Representing Soochow University were Tzu-Hsuan Lai (Junior, Dept. of International Business), Tsang-Hsuan Tsai (2nd-year, Dept. of Law), Hsiao-Chen Cheng (Junior, Dept. of Political Science), Ching-Hsiang Chen (3rd-year, Dept. of Law), and Chia-Yu Wang (Senior, Dept. of Computer Science and Information Management).

The three-day competition, co-organized by China’s Fujian Provincial Education Association for International Exchange (FPEAIE) and Taiwan’s Chinese Youth International Organization (CYIO), proceeded online in Fuzhou and Taipei due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The representatives of Mainland China included eight teams from Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Xiamen University, and other four universities, while the other eight teams represented Taiwan, including National Taiwan University (NTU), National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), National Cheng-Chi University (NCCU), Soochow University (SU), and other four universities.

The two debate topics of the final round were: “Is the live stream good or bad for the development of regional economy?” and “Has the knowledge gap between people become bigger or smaller in the era of big data?”

Tzu-Hsuan Lai, who was also awarded “The Best Debater” of this year, indicated that their team were not familiar with how the live stream has operated in China, so in order to prepare for the debate, they read a lot of information and consulted some experts in this field beforehand.
