The varsity speakers of Soochow’s School of Law finished strong at the 10th (2018) International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition on December 8th and 9th, 2018. After the two-day event held at the headquarters of The Red Cross Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Taipei, Soochow took home the 2nd place and sophomore Cheng-Han Lin was named Outstanding Debater.

Soochow was represented by three law school sophomores: Zi-Che Yang, Cheng-Han Lin, and Xiao-Wen Chen. They had been fully dedicated to studying the less popular international humanitarian law as a group, demonstrating great teamwork from collecting data, writing plaints, to making arguments on stage. They were also trained by professors Wan-Chun Ho and Zi-Wen Li, and tipped by two predecessors and last year’s winners Yan-Jun Lin and Ya-Ting Yu, who had helped the representatives refine their arguments and strengthen their poise.

The three speakers had to correct their mistakes and shortcomings in each round of the debates. They also needed to make modifications where the judges pose questions and to reflect and examine their performances. Team members who were not on stage also did well finding ways to deal with what the debater could not handle by him-/her-self. Such great teamwork was highly recognized by the judges, who decided to award Soochow varsity the 2nd place.
