Soochow and other 10 universities across Taiwan shared their experiences in developing social business through the Yunus Social Business Center (YSBC) Online Joint Meeting. SU’s YSBC director Professor Shong-Iee Ivan Su exchanged views about the promotion of university social responsibility (USR) and higher education sprout projects.

Some distinguished guests also attended the meeting and said a few words, including the former premier Chi-Kuo Mao, Deputy Mayor of Taipei Shan-Shan Huang, and the member of the Legislative Yuan Wan-An Chiang.

Muhammad Yunus, the co-founder of Yunus Social Business Global Initiatives and the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, gave an online speech about the sustainable development strategies amid the impact of COVID-19.

He stressed that in the face of Coronavirus pandemic, people should reflect in a different way and appreciate the opportunity for this collapsing world and the speeding economy to make an abrupt stop so that people could start thinking about the issues about sustainability. After the pandemic, many social problems will gradually emerge and become worse, and this is the best time to develop social enterprises, he added.

The participating Taiwanese universities other than Soochow included Chang Jung Christian University, National Kaohsiung University, National Quemoy University, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, National Taichung University of Science and Technology, National Taipei University of Business, Chung Yuan Christian University, National Dong Hwa University, and National Chin-Yi University of Technology.
