Actions in protecting and conserving the marine environment were shared in an online speech of the Tang Sung-Chang lecture series on May 13th, 2022, by Ren-Ping Chen, the founder and Chief Executive of Hiin Studio, an organization focusing on marine education.
In his lecture titled “What Sea Turtles Taught Us about Plastics,” Chen talked about his personal experience of seeing sea turtles’ stomachs full of trash such as Styrofoam, candy wrappers, plastic bags, and paper pieces. “The marine debris discarded by human beings not only harm marine life, but will eventually afflict mankind,” he said.
The ocean health advocate also stressed that “environmental conservation is not only the job of experts and scholars but everyone’s responsibility, because we all dispose of trash.” Chen urged students to join beach cleanups and reduce the use of plastics and chemicals, and he encouraged all citizens to take action as every choice humans make will impact the future of the Earth.
Co-organized by Soochow alumnus of the Department of Accounting Sung-Chang Tang (Class of 1955), Chiu-Ling Tang, the CEO of GFC Foundation and SU’s General Education Center, the Tang Sung-Chang lecture series is dedicated to promoting culture, art, and education to inspire students to explore cross-disciplinary knowledge.
