On August 12, 2025, the Soochow University Myanmar Alumni Association awarded its first scholarship to Shan-Liang Liu, the first-ever student admitted to the school’s Department of Psychology. Liu received a total of NT$60,000, including an NT$30,000 contribution from the association’s President Chun-Yun Tseng, who encouraged her to study diligently and build a better future for her family.
After years of challenges from the global pandemic and political instability, the Myanmar Alumni Association was officially founded on October 13, 2024. Led by President Tseng (Business Administration, Class of 1975) and Ming-Hsiang Wang (Economics, Class of 1971), both recipients of Soochow’s Outstanding Alumni Award, the association aims to strengthen alumni connections and support the university’s development in Myanmar.
Concerned about Taiwan’s declining birth rate and university enrollment, Tseng donated 20 million Myanmar kyats to assist Soochow’s recruitment efforts. Wang joined the initiative with matching support, and together they established the Soochow University Myanmar Alumni Association Scholarship for Underprivileged Burmese Students, encouraging talented youth to study at Soochow and promoting ties with local Chinese-language schools.
Alumni and officials gathered at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Yangon for the General Assembly and Scholarship Award Banquet. The event was presided over by Chih-Hsun Chen, Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Myanmar, while Representative Chung-Hsing Chou (Law, Class of 1972) delivered remarks praising Soochow’s academic excellence and encouraging Burmese students to pursue studies in Taiwan.
During the ceremony, Tseng highlighted Soochow’s achievements, citing this year’s 104 Job Bank University Rankings, where the university’s Finance & Economics and Law & Politics programs ranked No.1 among private universities. Wang commended Taiwan’s friendly learning environment, assuring students that Soochow provides strong academic and career support to help them succeed.
The banquet gathered numerous alumni, TECO staff members, community leaders, and teachers from two local Chinese-language schools. Special thanks were extended to Representative Chou for his continued support and generous hosting. The evening concluded in a warm atmosphere of unity, reflecting the strong bond between Soochow and its Myanmar alumni community.
